UNTIL
THERES A CURE! |
“Until
theirs a vaccine to halt the spread of the HIV Virus or a
cure for AIDS, education remains the only social vaccine available
to HIV prevention globally”. Africa Youth Ministries
Uganda is using Soccer/Netball to mobilize the out of school
teens/youth to educate them about the HIV/AIDS scourge. Through
“Kicking AIDS out of Uganda” Slogan, Africa Youth
Ministries Uganda is equipping young people with sport skills
and life skills that will help them to guard against the contracting
the deadly HIV virus. |
|
Similarly,
Africa Youth Ministries is using sports to meet the emotional
needs of AIDS Orphans. One of the greatest effects of the
AIDS pandemic is its impact on the psychological and mental
health of children who have nursed and lost their parents
under traumatic circumstances. The impact of parental death
on children is complex and affects the child’s mental
health and social energy, and might further result in stunted
development of emotional intelligence and life skills. Many
of the children worked with since 2003, show psychosomatic
disturbances, depression, very low self esteem, disturbed
social behaviours, hopelessness, low levels of life skills
etc. In times of sadness, remorse and grief, sports can provide
AIDS Orphans & adolescents with a sense of hope and normalcy.
It can help traumatized children learn to integrate the experience
of pain, fear & loss. It can help heal emotional scars,
creating a safe environment that enables children and adolescents
to express their feelings and build their self esteem, self
confidence, and trust. Given that sports activities emphasize
participation on a team or in a club, it provide children
with skills of team building and goal setting. |
|
Sport
form part of an innovative new approach towards youth and
HIV prevention. Former Director General of the World Health
Organization, Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland describes it in the
following terms: “Out of Africa comes a new method of
using sport to unite children and youth to form an alliance
against the ravages of HIV/AIDS. Infected or not, young people
can find strength and information in games and the joy of
sports.” |

Equipments Needed for 2007: |
At
Africa Youth Ministries Uganda, we believe that every child
has a right to play I.e to exercise their physical abilities
and talents. We also believe that orphanhood & being out
of school does not mean physical inability. Through our various
sports programs & activities we aim at harnessing the
natural talents such vulnerable children have. Similarly,
through play therapy we help such children e.g. AIDS &
War orphans overcome their traumatic experiences. |
